Workshop OFFERINGS
During this 90-minute Design Your Why workshop, we will take the concept of ikigai as inspiration for a self-reflective exploration to help redesign or consider your “why.”
The term ikigai has made its way into pop positive psychology in the past couple years but has a deep history in Japanese tradition and culture. While the phrase has no direct English translation, it is often interpreted as “a reason for living” but can more specifically be thought of as “value or happiness in living.” The phrase is often associated with an overlapping Venn diagram comprised of four parts: What you love, what you are good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for.
This workshop is a perfect opportunity for creative entrepreneurs, social-minded designers, and justice-oriented changemakers to learn practical tools and approaches to explore the nuanced intersections between value, need, and purpose.
What you can expect in this live 90-minute workshop:
Understand how the concept of ikigai can inform an exploration of the intersections between value, need, and purpose
Learn a three-step process for taking stock and gathering momentum
Be introduced to a repeatable framework for creative introspection and tools you can immediately apply
Indulge in playful discovery and reflection that can lead towards deeper understanding of your impact
Your workshop registration includes the following:
One (1) participant registration to the workshop session of your choosing (must select one)

During this 90-minute workshop, you will have the chance to learn more about awareness-building approaches including design research and design discovery methodologies.
Many would claim that the first part of any design-based inquiry is gaining a deeper sense of understanding for not just the system, process or product under examination but the stakeholders involved. While understanding a problem and its context is critical, an impact design practice calls us to draw attention to not just the design opportunity but the position of the designer as well.
At the Impact x Design Lab, we believe in developing awareness of your own positionality to the design opportunity and challenge.
This is a perfect opportunity for those who are starting a design process and wish to learn and practice tools that can create a solid foundation and starting point for justice-oriented design.
What you can expect from this live 90-minute workshop:
Understand how design can be a democratizing force for social justice
Learn different approaches to build awareness and engage in design discovery
Examine how different roles and approaches to a design process can be adapted to be expansive and inclusive

During this 90-minute workshop, you will have the chance to learn more about what it means to make an impact through justice-oriented design.
What do we mean by impact design? At the Impact x Design Lab, we believe that systems work the way they were designed. That doesn’t always mean they work for everybody. We have seen how systemic racism and social injustices are perpetuated by systems that were created to do so. It’s time that these systems are re-examined – by and with those who are the most impacted. We believe that we can use thoughtful and deliberate consideration to repair or rebuild systems so that they work better. We call this design.
This workshop is a perfect opportunity for design-curious entrepreneurs, changemakers, and leaders to learn about a justice-oriented practice that is designed to scale impact.
What you can expect from this live 90-minute workshop:
